State-park activity guide

Find state-park beaches and dunes

A Great Lake shore can be a beach day, a dunes walk or a quiet habitat visit. Choose the activity first; each needs its own conditions and access check.

Keep the place names straight

Indiana Dunes State Park has its own admission, campground and beach rules. Nearby national-park sites are separate destinations. Illinois Beach also has distinct North and South units.

Check current beach conditions

Check the park’s swimming arrangements, weather and beach notices before leaving. Keep a shore walk as an option if swimming conditions are unsuitable.

Use designated access

Dune grass and wet shore habitats are part of the destination. Stay on permitted access instead of treating a visible gap as an informal path. A shore walk can be a complete visit when swimming is not suitable.
