Find a state park for waterfalls

Flow, footing and access are separate questions. Choose a waterfall for its setting, then check whether the route and present conditions support the visit you want.

Different falls, different expectations

Cumberland Falls is a broad river waterfall. Starved Rock’s waterfalls depend on rain. Do not treat one summer photograph as a promise of what either park will look like on your date.

An overlook is a different outing

Clifty Falls lists an accessible overlook as well as rugged canyon routes. Decide whether your group wants a view into the landscape or a walk through it, and confirm the exact access.

Water is not permission

A pool below a fall can look inviting without being a permitted swimming place. Starved Rock and Matthiessen prohibit swimming and wading in their park water bodies. Follow the individual park’s current rules.
