State-park activity guide

Find a state park for hiking

A short trail can still have ladders, steep steps or a streambed. Find a landscape you like, then read the actual route before deciding it fits your group.

Start with terrain

Turkey Run’s ravines and Brown County’s wooded ridges offer very different walking days. Compare the surface, climbing and obstacles before comparing mileage. A route number on the current official map is more useful than a broad search for the park’s “best hike.”

Make the return part of the plan

Choose a trailhead, a route back and a point where you will turn around. A loop is not automatically easier than returning the way you came. If conditions change, follow official closures rather than creating a bypass.

Keep a shorter choice

A good park day does not require the longest route. Choose an allowed alternative before leaving, especially when rain, heat or the group’s energy may change the outing.
