State-park activity guide

Explore state-park wildlife and habitats

Start with a habitat rather than a promised sighting. Shore, marsh, oak woodland and dune edges reward different kinds of slow observation.

Choose a setting

Illinois Beach includes marsh and oak woodland as well as shoreline. Kohler-Andrae pairs dunes with pines. Use the official map to find a permitted route through the habitat you want to observe.

Leave sightings open-ended

Pere Marquette’s official material describes seasonal eagle viewing. That is not a guarantee that a particular bird will appear. A successful outing can be about the river landscape even when wildlife stays out of view.

Observe from permitted places

Do not turn an animal sighting into a reason to leave a designated route or enter a closed area. Check nature-center programs directly if an interpreted activity is important to your visit.
