A choice, not a ranking

Starved Rock or Matthiessen?

Choose the landscape and permitted route first. These neighboring Illinois parks are distinct outings, and current closures can matter more than a list of famous canyon names.

Why choose itExplore sandstone canyons and Illinois River bluffs. Waterfall flow depends on rain, and the phased trail project affects which places you can reach.Explore sandstone dells, streams and woodland near Oglesby. Choose the Dells or Vermilion River area to match your activity and current access.
Overnight optionsUse the official campground information and distinguish it from lodge accommodation or private camping nearby.Do not assume a family campground from a broad camping search result. Check the official page for the camping category offered and use a different overnight base if needed.
Important checkThe October 2026 project notice lists several inaccessible canyons and access points. The project runs in phases; use the current project page, not this snapshot, to choose a route. At review, IDNR listed the Lake Falls bridge/trail closed and a restroom repair notice. Verify the current detour, facilities and seasonal closures before visiting.

Which fits your day?

Choose Starved Rock for its wider canyon-and-river-bluff setting, using the current improvement-project information to select access. Choose Matthiessen for the close relationship between its dells, stream and woodland. Neither is automatically easier, empty or suitable for swimming.

The check that can change the answer

Starved Rock’s construction is phased. Matthiessen listed a Lake Falls bridge/trail closure at review. Do not combine old itineraries into an assumed open two-park loop.
